Objective: To implement and test a prototype terminal capable of operating in Ku and Ka band (not simultaneously).
Targeted Improvements: Integration of Ku and Ka band terminal will allow reduce terminal size and cost as well as improve performance and reliability due to reduced component count.
Description:
This activity is applicable for several mobile environments where the ability to switch between Ka and Ku band is required
Currently, there are on-going antenna development covering both Ka and Ku band. The focus so far is on antenna optics to achieve the dual band functionality. This activity will step beyond the antenna optics and look to integrating other terminal functions. Such integration should make the antenna smaller, improve overall performance, reduce cost and improve reliability due to reduced component count.
Initially the terminal will be analysed for possible candidates for integration e.g. transceiver, antenna control unit, power, etc. The impact of this integration will be assessed according to cost, performance, terminal size and reliability. The areas for integration showing the most promise will be designed, developed and tested. The resulting terminal design will then be compared with the non-integrated terminal to demonstrate the gains achieved.
