Planned Tender Issue: quarter 2, 2013
The objective of this activity is to develop a feed assembly for gateways beams at Q/V band, including both telecommunication and tracking functions. Targeted Improvements: At least 100% more bandwidth available for Ka-band user links due to the redeployment of gateway links to Q/V band. Description: The Q/V-band is being considered for the gateway (GTW) links in next generation broadband telecommunication satellite systems in order to free Ka-band bandwidth for the user links, thereby increasing the system capacity. Due to the very narrow beams generated by the GTW antenna, it is mandatory to incorporate RF tracking feeds in the antenna in order to correct any pointing error. Operators have clearly established requirements for the co-location of GTW stations and RF beacons on the ground. This requires a single feed combining both the communications and tracking functions. This feed has to be highly compact, since it is part of a multi-feed array system within the focal plane of the GTW multiple-beam antenna. The development shall cover the complete Q/V band and shall operate in circular polarisation, with the possibility for adaptation to linear polarisation. The activity includes the following tasks: 1) Consolidation of requirements, trade-off and preliminary analysis of the combined telecommunication and tracking feed. 2) Design, manufacturing and testing of the critical parts of an EM of the feed, representative at RF level.
