The objective of the project is to enhance the performance of the high speed internet service which is using the low cost "Return-Link" system previously developed with ESA support.
An ISP satellite gateway ( Hub ) has been installed and extensively tested. This Hub/ISP has a high speed connection directly to the Internet backbone. Phase One - the object of the project is to increase the return speed from the end-user terminals who are dispersed across the footprint of the Eutelsat W3 satellite.
The principal challenges are: - Develop new QPSK high-rate transmit card
- Intergrate 'turbo coding' software
- More efficient use of space segment
- Higher return speeds from end-users
The present end-user return system, which uses 16Kbits/sec BPSK, has been extensively tested and is currently operational on Eutelsat W3 Satellite at 7 degrees East. A new company, Web-Sat Ltd. has been established which is utilising the developed technology, this company is in negotiations with satellite operators throughout the world to franchise this technology.
