In-home Gap Fillers
Programme Element: ARTES 34
Reference nr.: 08.153.58
Planned Tender Issue: quarter 4, 2014

This activity shall aim at the design and development of low-cost personal gap fillers, providing indoor coverage in buildings for the hybrid satellite/terrestrial system defined by the DVB-SH specifications. Both Base-Band and RF functions shall be covered. Particular effort shall be placed in minimising the gap-filler cost, in order to allow for a large deployment and increased service availability.

Both DVB-SH re-transmitters and "enhanced" gap fillers with satellite return link transmission shall be developed. The preliminary specifications for the return link air interface will be provided by ESA following the outcome of previous studies. They are expected to cover the low-rate messaging return link for different types of services like the data acquisition and location based services for the vehicular scenario and the interactive TV and additional broadcasting services with some degree of interactivity for the in-home scenario.

In order to operate the S-band system following the SH-B profile, it is required that the gap filler shall be regenerative, demodulating the SH TDM satellite signal and re-transmitting an SH OFDM or WiFi/WiMax/Bluetooth signal. In order to guarantee the largest flexibility and complying with different possible operational scenarios, it is required that SH OFDM signal reception is also supported. However, the impact on complexity and cost targets shall be accurately evaluated. Support of wireless technologies like WiFi, WiMax and Bluetooth shall also be considered and carefully assessed and traded-offs performed.
