Relations with the EU
Both ESA and the European Union are endeavouring to bring the benefits of space to Europe's citizens. Telecommunications is a major component of the overall partnership between the two organisations.
Both share the common objective of strengthening Europe, its institutions and its industrial capabilities. Within their respective frames of reference, ESA and the EU coordinate their respective R&D actions, providing each other with mutual support and transparency. Specific projects are developed in partnership (i.e. with components funded by ESA and by the EU). The development of a specific thematic initiative by the EU under the 7th Framework Programme is coordinated with ESA's TIA directorate’s Telecommunications Long-Term Plan.
ESA continues its efforts to assist in the development of systems contributing to the resolution of societal issues addressed by the EU such as civil protection, security and health.
