ESA Telecom Call for Ideas 2005

13 Jul 2005

The European Space Agency (ESA) is inviting industry and experts from European Member States and Canada to come up with ideas and suggestions for future research and development activities in the area of satellite communication.

You are invited to forward your ideas and suggestions for future research and development activities within the Telecom program of the European Space Agency (ESA). Please be assured your inputs will be treated confidentially.

Every year workplans are prepared for the ARTES-1, ARTES-3 and ARTES-5 elements of the Telecom ARTES programme. The activities in the workplans are selected from the response to this "Call for Ideas" by the ESA Telecommunications team with support from experts from other ESA directorates.

The Telecom program consists of activities for the longer term and activities for the short term and close to market. Activities for the longer term are for products expected to be needed by the commercial market in about 5 years time, while short term close to market refer to products to be mature and ready for the market within about 3 years. Activities for the longer term are usually 100% funded by ESA while activities for the short term close to market are only up to 50% funded by ESA.

Activities for the longer term

The workplans for activities for the longer term (ARTES-1 and ARTES-5) need to be defined in detail for each activity and cover the areas of satcom market analysis, studies of satcom systems and development of satcom technology. Your input is required to establish a workplan meeting your requirements. Ideas are most welcome for the following programme lines: Programme Development, Technology, User Segment and Mobility.

Activities for the short term close to market

The workplan for activities for the short term and close to market (ARTES-3) addresses themes, not individual activities. However, it is necessary to receive the titles of the activities you plan to submit proposals for in the frame of ARTES-3 in 2006 including a budgetary estimate and the objective of the activity. A detailed description of an idea is not required. Ideas are most welcome for the following programme lines: Technology, User Segment and Mobility.

No Workplan is needed for ARTES 4, which operates on the basis of a Continuous Open Call for Proposals, so the Call for Ideas does not apply here.

The ARTES-1, ARTES-3 and ARTES-5 workplans for 2006 will be published on the ESA Telecommunications website early 2006.

Due to the volume of ideas usually received in response to this "Call for Ideas" individual feedback will unfortunately not be possible. Your ideas are, however, highly valued and shape the Telecommunications program of ESA.

Please, forward your ideas and suggestions using the online forms which can be found at the top-right of this page.

The ideas and suggestions should reach us before Friday 30th September 2005.
