Enhanced Skyplex

Objectives

SkyPlex is the world's first satellite platform to deliver Internet and TV services with a regenerative transponder. When launched it will provide much more flexibility and lower operating costs for Internet Service Providers with respect to traditional satellites platforms.

Features

The Enhanced Skyplex Unit has the same functionality with the nominal Skyplex units embarked on Hot Bird 6 and W3A. However, the mass and the volume is reduced:

The unit on the left is the normal Skyplex and the unit on the right is Enhanced Skyplex.

The mass of the Enhanced Skyplex Unit is about 4 Kg.

All this was made possible by applying advanced digital signal processing with state-of-the art semiconductor technology.

The key-feature of the Enhanced Skyplex Unit is the on-board Turbo Decoder. This advanced coding scheme allows a reduction of the transmitted power by about 5.5 dB (equivalent to 3.5) without changing transmission rate or bandwidth of the channel.

Challenges

Not applicable.

Benefits

This represents a breakthrough in multimedia service provision across Europe. Major benefits of SkyPlex will be the independent and distributed up-link to the satellite resource (accordingly to DVB-S standard) as well as the availability of a near bandwidth on demand capability. The cost competitiveness of DVB-S is considered an important key factor.

Current Status (dated: 17 Feb 2004)

The project has been completed.
