SkyPlex is the world's first satellite platform to deliver Internet and TV services with a regenerative transponder. When launched it will provide much more flexibility and lower operating costs for Internet Service Providers with respect to traditional satellites platforms. |
The Enhanced Skyplex Unit has the same functionality with the nominal Skyplex units embarked on Hot Bird 6 and W3A. However, the mass and the volume is reduced:
The unit on the left is the normal Skyplex and the unit on the right is Enhanced Skyplex.

The mass of the Enhanced Skyplex Unit is about 4 Kg. All this was made possible by applying advanced digital signal processing with state-of-the art semiconductor technology. The key-feature of the Enhanced Skyplex Unit is the on-board Turbo Decoder. This advanced coding scheme allows a reduction of the transmitted power by about 5.5 dB (equivalent to 3.5) without changing transmission rate or bandwidth of the channel.
This represents a breakthrough in multimedia service provision across Europe. Major benefits of SkyPlex will be the independent and distributed up-link to the satellite resource (accordingly to DVB-S standard) as well as the availability of a near bandwidth on demand capability. The cost competitiveness of DVB-S is considered an important key factor.
The project has been completed.
