ARTES 7 EDRS Overview

ARTES 7 EDRS is dedicated to the development and implementation of the European Data Relay System (EDRS). Data relay satellites are placed in geostationary orbit to relay information to and from non-geostationary satellites, spacecraft, other vehicles, and fixed Earth stations that otherwise are not able to permanently transmit/receive data.

EDRS - A strategic space asset for Europe

The European Data Relay Satellite (EDRS) system will be an independent, European satellite system designed to reduce time delays in the transmission of large quantities of data.

News and Events

EDRS space network ready to go ahead

23 November 2012 The design of Europe’s data relay satellite system – EDRS - has been completed and approved. This marks the moment when it moves ahead with a green light from its first customer, the Global Monitoring for Environment and Security initiative from the European Union (GMES).

EDRS makes room for Hylas-3

12 July 2012 When the European Data Relay System launches its second satellite in 2015, it will be taking the Hylas-3 communications payload along for the ride thanks to ESA’s ‘hosted payload’ approach.

Redu to house operations centre for EDRS satellite relay

26 March 2012 ESA’s Redu Centre in Belgium will become one of the two centres operating Europe’s new satellite system that will speed up the relay of large quantities of data for monitoring our planet.
